FLIGHT ANIMAL
The Horse-Human Nervous System Experience
A six-session experiential journey into stress physiology, nervous-system awareness, connection and resilience.
The horse isn't the therapist. The horse is the teacher.
Horses are flight animals. Their survival depends upon their extraordinary ability to recognize subtle changes in their environment, respond to potential threats and—when the danger has passed—return to a state of calm.
Humans possess many of these same survival mechanisms.
But unlike horses, we can become caught in patterns of vigilance, tension and stress long after the immediate threat has disappeared.
Flight Animal is a six-session experiential education and wellness program that uses the horse as a unique window into the human nervous system. Each session is approximately
Led by Dr. Amy Nelson, ND, the program combines education about stress physiology and the nervous system with ground-based experiences involving horses. Participants learn to recognize activation, observe their own physiological responses and explore how presence, breathing, movement, boundaries and communication influence both themselves and the horse.
No riding is required.
THE SIX-SESSION EXPERIENCE
1 | SAFETY
Understanding the Flight Animal
Before there can be connection, there must be safety.
Learn how horses perceive their environment and recognize potential threats. We'll explore the physiology of the stress response and compare the horse's survival system with our own.
Through observation and interaction with the horses, begin noticing what activation—and safety—actually look and feel like.
Explore: vigilance • safety cues • sympathetic activation • stress physiology • returning to baseline
2 | AWARENESS
Noticing What's Happening
You can't regulate something you don't recognize.
Learn to notice subtle changes in breathing, muscle tension, attention, movement and body awareness.
Horses are remarkably responsive to changes in posture, energy, intention and movement. Their immediate feedback provides an opportunity to become more aware of signals we often overlook in ourselves.
Explore: body awareness • interoception • breathing • tension • attention • presence
3 | REGULATION
Finding Neutral
Regulation doesn't mean never becoming activated. It means developing the ability to recognize activation and find your way back.
Working alongside the horse, explore how breathing, movement, distance, rhythm and presence can influence physiological state.
Watch how horses naturally move between alertness and relaxation—and begin developing your own tools for returning toward neutral.
Explore: autonomic regulation • breath • movement • grounding • recovery • resilience
4 | BOUNDARIES
Pressure & Release
Horses understand boundaries exceptionally well.
Too much pressure creates resistance or withdrawal. Too little communication creates uncertainty. Clear, appropriate communication creates safety.
Through ground-based exercises with the horse, explore pressure and release, personal space, clarity and what happens when boundaries become either too rigid or too porous.
Explore: boundaries • communication • pressure and release • clarity • personal space • responsiveness
5 | TRUST
Connection Without Control
Trust cannot be forced.
Horses invite us to experience the difference between controlling an interaction and creating the conditions in which connection can occur.
Explore communication, consistency, intention and presence while working with the horse—and discover what changes when you stop trying to control the outcome.
Explore: trust • connection • congruence • communication • choice • mutual respect
6 | INTEGRATION
Moving Forward
The final session brings the experience together.
Using the skills developed throughout the program, participants complete a guided experience with the horse incorporating awareness, regulation, boundaries, communication and trust.
We'll reflect on what you've learned about your own stress-response patterns and identify practical ways to bring greater awareness and regulation into everyday life.
Explore: integration • resilience • self-awareness • communication • moving forward
WHY HORSES?
A horse doesn't care about your job title, your accomplishments or the story you tell about yourself.
The horse responds to what is happening right now.
Because horses communicate primarily through body language, movement, pressure, distance and subtle environmental cues, interacting with them can provide immediate feedback about our own presence and communication.
They give us an opportunity to experience concepts that are difficult to learn from a book.
The lesson isn't about becoming better at horses.
It's about discovering what the horse can teach you about yourself.
THE EXPERIENCE
6 private 90-minute sessions
All experiences are ground-based. No horseback riding or previous horse experience is required.
Sessions combine:
Education — Learn the physiology behind stress and nervous-system responses.
Observation — Watch how horses respond to activation, uncertainty, safety and connection.
Experience — Participate in guided ground-based interactions with the horse.
Integration — Identify what you noticed and how those observations may apply to everyday life.

WHO IS FLIGHT ANIMAL FOR?
Flight Animal may be a good fit for people who want to better understand their stress responses, become more aware of their body's signals, develop tools for self-regulation, explore boundaries and communication, or simply experience a different way of learning about themselves.
You do not need to consider yourself a "horse person."
Sometimes the people who know the least about horses have the most interesting discoveries.
Find Your Way.
Flight Animal is an experiential education and wellness program. It is not psychotherapy, counseling, or a substitute for mental-health treatment. Flight Animal does not diagnose or treat mental-health conditions. Participants who need mental-health treatment should work with an appropriately licensed mental-health professional.
One change I made intentionally: I positioned the six-session experience as private rather than small-group. I think the November workshop should be your accessible group introduction at $149, while the six-session program becomes your premium, individualized offering at $1,500. That creates a very natural pathway: Workshop → Flight Animal Experience.
