Don’t be surprised if she out-smarts you. We think we can teach her algebra. Lilac is the personal horse of me, Dr. Amy Nelson. She was born at our family farm in Burlington, Kansas. Her mother is Star, a sweet retired off-the-track Thoroughbred mare. Star was one the lesson horses from in Oregon, so some you may remember her. On the day Star gave birth, the lilac bushes were in full bloom. Hours later, a winter storm blew through, making it the day snow fell on the lilac blooms. This sums up Lilac perfectly. Her bloodlines come from Bold Ruler, Secretariat’s sire, this is the snow-storm part of her. When she was three years-old, I began her training and when I first asked for her canter on the lunge line, she did it as fast as she could. It made me laugh because I always had to remind her take it easy. We don’t have to do everything as fast as possible. Lilac’s biggest talent is her mind - she a very logical horse, who loves puzzles and figuring out the riddle. Her favorite skills are lateral work - half-pass, leg-yielding, shoulder-in. Twice a year, we actually moved cattle to different pastures and to do this we used our horses. At the age of 12, I started my first filly (Tess) under saddle and it wasn’t long before I became obsessed with horse training, showing, and adventuring. I attended William Woods University on an equestrian scholarship where I learned the art of Dressage training, my main passion. Dressage gave me the skills to athletically develop horses and understand their physical needs. Here, I was able to ride with world-class riders, judges and trainers. Along the way, my path took me to naturopathic medical school in Portland, OR. During this time, I taught riding lessons and worked in the field of therapeutic riding while I obtained my training as a primary care doctor. Currently I work as a Naturopathic Doctor* in Austin, Texas and have founded North Star Equestrian Center, an affiliate of North Star Healing Center.
